Jeff Boal, RN is latest Daisy Award honoree
Emergency Room Nurse Jeff Boal has been selected as the latest Daisy Award winner.
The family that nominated him for the prestigious award wrote: “One of your employees stood out most particularly. The ER RN that worked the front desk on this night truly went above and beyond. This RN was exceptionally responsive to those of us waiting in the wait room. In between seeing patients, he would run through to bounce an infant while her mother retrieved belongings from her vehicle, cleaned vomit off the floor and even assisted a woman who entered the wait room looking for someone with jumper cables. My husband and I watched as he demonstrated compassion to even those who were unable to be patient during the process.”
The Daisy Award was created to recognize extraordinary nurses who make an enormous difference in the lives of so many people by the work they do every day.
Congratulations to the other two nominees this quarter: Monica Loring and Bettina-Jo Trap.
Waldo County General Hospital receives a gold star for addressing tobacco
At an awards ceremony on September 15 at the Maine Hospital Association in Augusta, Maine, the Breathe Easy Coalition of Maine celebrated the efforts of Maine hospitals to address smoking and tobacco use on their campuses. The event highlighted the 2016 Maine Tobacco-Free Hospital Network Gold Star Standards of Excellence Program award winners including Waldo County General Hospital. Thirty-three Maine hospitals and four individual champions were recognized for their achievements in advancing their organization’s smoke and tobacco-free policies as well as promoting tobacco-free lifestyles in their communities.
“Hospitals are health and wellness role models for their communities, so it is important for them to set an example around reducing tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke,” said Sarah Mayberry of the Breathe Easy Coalition. “The Gold Star Standards of Excellence Program is an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of Maine hospitals to create policies to address these issues.”
The annual Gold Star Standards of Excellence program recognizes healthcare organizations for their efforts to address best practice standards around tobacco use, exposure and quitting supports. Waldo County General Hospital was recognized at the gold level in the 2016 program.
Tobacco use continues to be the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the country and a major contributor to healthcare costs. “Meeting these standards requires hard work and commitment from these healthcare organizations, and the Breathe Easy Coalition of Maine is pleased to be able to honor their dedication,” said Mayberry.

Literacy issues can affect health
When Lisa Reed, RN, became the manager of the Population Health Department at WCGH, she knew literacy was one of the areas she wanted to focus on. As a nurse, she had seen too many patients who had difficulty reading their discharge instructions and medication bottles.
In an effort to increase literacy in the Midcoast, Lisa and several members of the population health department have recently begun visiting local Head Start programs. They read to the children and then give each of them a book of their own to take home, purchased by Belfast Public Health Nursing.
“I think if we start a love of reading early, we improve a child’s chances for academic growth and achievements as they move throughout life,” Lisa said.
Reading to the children were Judy Mendelson, Stacey Hall, Amanda Richards, Valerie Curtis and Ashley Hoffman.
